What is Triple Super Phosphate?

Triple Super Phosphate is a highly concentrated phosphorus fertilizer. Its chemical formula is primarily monocalcium phosphate$Ca(H_2PO_4)_2$.

Unlike naturally occurring phosphate rock, which plants cannot digest easily, TSP is chemically processed to be 100% plant-available. It is produced by reacting ground phosphate rock with phosphoric acid. This specific reaction distinguishes it from Single Super Phosphate (SSP), which is made using sulfuric acid.

The “Triple” in the name isn’t just marketing; it refers to the concentration. SSP typically contains around 16-20% phosphate. TSP concentrates that power to 46% phosphate ($P_2O_5$).

Physical Characteristics

One of the most common questions we get is: “Why should I buy TSP (0-46-0) when I can buy DAP (18-46-0) and get nitrogen for free?”

The answer lies in agronomic control.

Perfect for Legumes

Leguminous crops—such as Alfalfa (Lucerne), Soybeans, Peanuts, and Peas—have a unique ability. They form a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria (Rhizobia) to fix nitrogen directly from the air.

If you apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer like DAP to these crops, you make the plants “lazy.” They stop fixing their own nitrogen because you are spoon-feeding them. TSP provides the massive phosphate boost these crops need for root development without adding nitrogen. This encourages the natural nitrogen-fixing process, leading to healthier crops and lower fertilizer bills.

Precision Balancing

For other crops, you may already have high nitrogen levels in your soil, or you may be applying nitrogen separately via Urea. Using TSP allows you to manage your Phosphorus (P) and Nitrogen (N) applications independently. You are not forced to add N just to get P.


The Hidden Nutrient: Calcium-Triple Super Phosphate TSP

While TSP is sold for its phosphate, it is also a massive source of Calcium (Ca). TSP typically contains around 15% Calcium by weight.

In sandy soils, such as those found across the UAE and Oman, calcium deficiency is a frequent, silent yield-killer. Calcium is structural; it builds the cell walls of the plant. A plant with good calcium levels is:

  • More resistant to disease.

  • Sturdier against wind.

  • Produces fruit with a longer shelf life (vital for tomatoes and cucumbers).

Because the calcium in TSP is chemically bound as calcium phosphate, it is readily available to the plant, unlike the calcium found in limestone which takes years to break down.


How TSP Behaves in UAE Soil-Triple Super Phosphate TSP

Understanding your soil is key to getting the most out of your fertilizer. The soils in our region are predominantly calcareous (alkaline), meaning they have a high pH (often above 7.5 or 8.0).

The pH Problem

In high pH soils, phosphorus has a habit of getting “locked up.” The calcium in the soil reacts with the phosphate fertilizer to form insoluble compounds that plants cannot eat. This is called “fixation.”

The TSP Solution

TSP has a distinct advantage here. When a granule of Triple Super Phosphate dissolves, it creates a highly acidic micro-environment around itself. The pH of the solution around a dissolving TSP granule can drop as low as 1.5.

This acidity neutralizes the alkaline soil in the immediate vicinity of the granule. The result is that the phosphate stays soluble and “plant-available” for a longer period compared to other fertilizers, giving your crop a better chance to absorb it.


Application Guidelines-Triple Super Phosphate TSP

To get the best return on investment (ROI) from Agro National’s TSP, follow these application methods.

Basal Application (Broadcasting)

This is the standard method for field preparation. Apply TSP before plowing or harrowing. Incorporate the granules into the top 15–20 cm of the soil. Phosphorus moves very slowly in the soil (only a few centimeters per season). If you leave it on the surface, it won’t reach the roots. Mixing it into the tillage zone ensures it is right where the new roots will grow.

Banding (Recommended for Alkaline Soils)

For the sandy, high-pH soils of the UAE, banding is superior to broadcasting. Apply the fertilizer in a concentrated strip (band) about 5 cm to the side and 5 cm below the seed during planting. By concentrating the fertilizer in a band, you reduce the surface area that touches the soil. This minimizes the “fixation” issue mentioned earlier, keeping the phosphorus available for the crop roots to intercept.

Top Dressing (For Perennials)

While not ideal for annual crops, top dressing works for established Alfalfa or Pasture. Apply after a cutting, or during the winter dormancy period. Spread evenly over the surface. Over time, rainfall or irrigation will wash the nutrients down to the shallow feeder roots.


Crop-Specific Recommendations-Triple Super Phosphate TSP

Alfalfa (Lucerne)

This is the primary consumer of TSP in the region.

  • Establishment: Incorporate 100–200 kg/ha into the soil bed before planting.

  • Maintenance: Apply 50–100 kg/ha annually in late winter or after every 3rd cut to replace what the harvest has removed.

Wheat & Barley

If your soil test shows high nitrogen but low phosphorus, use TSP instead of DAP to avoid lodging (falling over due to too much nitrogen). Apply 50–100 kg/ha at planting.

Vegetables (Tomatoes, Potatoes)

Phosphorus is critical for the early “energy” phase of growth. The calcium in TSP helps prevent Blossom End Rot in tomatoes. Blend 100–150 kg/ha into the rows.


Blending and Compatibility-Triple Super Phosphate TSP

TSP is a favorite for bulk blending because of its hard granules, but there is one major rule: Be careful with Urea.

  • TSP + Potash (MOP): Excellent. Stable and easy to store.

  • TSP + Ammonium Sulphate: Excellent. Adds sulphur to the mix.

  • TSP + Urea: Caution Required. You can mix TSP and Urea, but you must apply it immediately. If you let a TSP/Urea pile sit for more than a day or two, a chemical reaction releases water. The pile will turn into a wet, sticky sludge that will clog your spreaders. If you must store the mix, ensure the TSP is very dry and the humidity is low.
